WORD CLASSES (parts of speech)
VERBS are words that express an action (read), occurence (become), or state of being (be).
NOUNS are words that refer to persons (John), places (Greece), things (a book), events (picnic), substances (beer), quality (height), quantity (five), etc. They are names for everything that exists. In English, they are usually preceded by an article (a, an, the).
ADJECTIVES are words that describe other words, usually nouns (hot, cold, boring, fun). They can express quality (nice, lazy), possession (my book), or order (first, second).
School is fun. Fun school.
ADVERBS typically answer questions such as how?, in what way?, when?, where?, and to what extent?. They can be used with verbs (She runs quickly), adjectives (She is very quick) and other adverbs (She runs very quickly). They modify or add to the meaning of those words.
